Apple silently removed an allegedly malicious cryptocurrency wallet from the App Store after numerous complaints from users that their EOS EOS tokens were stolen after using the app.
The app in question, EOSIO Wallet Explorer, came into the spotlight after popular YouTube personalities, the Hodgetwins, posted a video accusing the app of stealing their tokens.
In it, the YouTubers explained that 1,500 EOS ($ 8,500) were secretly removed from her wallet shortly after using the app, not without her consent or knowledge.
It remains unclear how many users fell victim to the purportedly malicious wallet. There is also no information on how many people downloaded the app, as Apple does not make such data available to the public. What we do know is that the seedy wallet solution stayed on the App Store for almost three months after it was launched in July. that is despite repeated complaints from users.
The twins, who advertise over 4 million subscribers on YouTube, added that they have since filed a request with ECAF (the EOS control body responsible for processing transaction cancellations and account freezes on the network) to invalidate the fraudulent transactions.
“I just want my damn cones back,” one Hodgetwin said to Hard Fork. “That was $ 15,000 away.”
Hard Fork reached out to Apple for comment on the situation at Hodgetwins. Shortly afterwards, EOSIO Wallet Explorer was already accessed from the App Store. Apple never returned our requests for comments.
For the recording, tons of burned users had gone to Reddit and other social media platforms to warn against using EOSIO Wallet Explorer. The app also received a number of negative reviews and allegations of theft on the App Store.
We contacted Apple to inquire about the reason for the EOSIO Wallet Explorer removal and will update this part as we learn more.
In the meantime, be sure to do some background checks before trusting little-known software vendors with your money. There is always a risk that attackers will chase you, even in the official app store.
